Cities: Affordable Housing workshop presented by the Norman Foster Foundation

November 14–18, 2022

Public debates: November 16, 6:30–8pm

The Cities: Affordable Housing workshop is being organized by the Norman Foster Foundation with assistance from the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction and will take place from November 14–18, 2022.

How can we provide decent housing in our cities? In addition to examining how different stakeholders can meet the demand for housing in our cities, the 2022 NFF Cities: Affordable Housing workshop will also examine what architecture and design can do to meet the challenge.

In order to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals and ensure that people may continue to prosper in our cities during a period of urbanization, affordable housing must be made available in our cities. The difficulty is unheard of. We must deal with climate change, rising energy costs, unplanned and rapid urbanization, migration, and the financialization of housing. Our industry’s productivity has been stagnant for decades, and we are slow to adopt new practices and technologies. Due to resource scarcity, material costs are rising quickly, and the use of conventional materials and methods leaves a significant carbon footprint.

Through three lenses—innovative design and construction, urban planning and placemaking, and social and public issues—the Workshop will examine this issue. The workshop will examine the supply of affordable housing in cities of various contexts worldwide with contributions from a multidisciplinary spectrum of top specialists.

The Holcim Foundation is sponsoring the workshop, which presents an opportunity to join a remarkable network of professionals working internationally to address the built environment’s sustainability issues.

The Academic Body brings together a wide range of practitioners from different fields related to housing, including: Alejandro Aravena, Executive Director, ELEMENTAL, Santiago, Chile; ELEMENTAL Copec Chair, Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, Chile; Peter van Assche, Founding Principal, bureau SLA, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Lector of Architecture and Circular Thinking, Amsterdam University of the Arts, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; STO Foundation Visiting Professor, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany; Tatiana Bilbao, Principal, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico; Jonathan Ledgard, Founder, Tropic Rossums Studio, Nairobi, Kenya; Former Director, Afrotech Future Africa Initiative (Afrotech-EPFL), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland; Susana Saiz, Director, Arup Spain, Madrid, Spain, Stuart Smith, Director, Arup Germany, Berlin, Germany and Maria Vassilakou, Former Vice Mayor, Vienna, Austria.
