2022–23 lecture series presented by Rice Architecture

September 7–November 18, 2022

There are new methods of interacting with and surviving in the world that arise when ideas and cultures clash. Pluralism, a style of political philosophy, makes use of this dynamic state and encourages the coexistence of various viewpoints. This is far from a neutral stance, though, in the face of mounting crises and unrestrained inequality; rather, it becomes a commitment to struggle and conversation. Rice Architecture’s yearly lecture series, Engaging Pluralism, examines how architects and designers may work with friction, contradiction, and plurality to affect greater social, cultural, and environmental change by drawing on a wide range of speakers. It serves as a forum for all schools to discuss the opportunities and difficulties of creating for a heterogeneous society.
