The Structurist Creative Research Fellowship (SCRF) was founded to advance the mission of The Structurist, an interdisciplinary journal established in 1960 by Eli Bornstein. The journal, renowned for exploring the nexus between art and ecology, emphasized the critical role of creative practices in preserving our endangered ecosystems. The SCRF supports contemporary projects that enrich this discourse, reinforcing the journal’s legacy without romanticizing its principles.
Open to both Canadian and international applicants at any career stage, the SCRF invites proposals that culminate in publicly accessible forms, such as publications, exhibitions, films, actions, or performances. These projects must also feature a seminar, symposium, or public lecture in Saskatoon, facilitated by the University of Saskatchewan Art Galleries and Collections team.
The fellowship offers a budget of up to 20,000 CAD for project costs, with additional funding for travel and accommodations related to Saskatoon-based activities. Fellows will have access to the University of Saskatchewan archives on The Structurist and the university’s art collection.
Applications are due by 5 PM CST on August 19, 2024. Detailed application criteria are available on the University of Saskatchewan Art Galleries and Collection website. Inquiries can be directed to structurist.fellowship[at]usask.ca.
The Structurist, active from 1960 to 2020, published 52 issues focusing on the interplay of art, architecture, and nature. The journal included works by eminent figures such as György Kepes and essays by Frank Lloyd Wright, Piet Mondrian, and László Moholy-Nagy. Known for its unique interdisciplinary approach, the journal remains a significant resource for research and creative endeavors.
