February 2–4
Columbus, Ohio – The Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University will showcase the US premiere of Sarah Maldoror: Tricontinental Cinema from February 3 to April 28, 2024. This immersive multimedia exhibition honors the legacy of Sarah Maldoror (1929–2020), the “mother of African cinema,” who created nearly four dozen films and championed Black women’s rights.
Tricontinental Cinema offers an unprecedented exploration of Maldoror’s work as a filmmaker, activist, and artist. It features projections from over a dozen films, highlighting her antiracist and irreverent style. The exhibition also includes works by contemporaries like Melvin Edwards and Wifredo Lam, as well as collaborations with Aimé Césaire, Jean Genet, Chris Marker, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Contemporary artists such as Chloé Quenum, Soñ Gweha, Kapwani Kiwanga, and Ana Mercedes Hoyos engage in a dialogue with Maldoror’s art, while Maya Mihindou creates vibrant murals to guide visitors through the exhibition.
The Wexner Center’s spring 2024 calendar includes a variety of programs related to Maldoror’s influence, beginning with an Exhibition Opening Celebration on February 2. These programs encompass all disciplines presented at the Wex, reflecting the diverse impact of this remarkable artist.
