Spring 2023 programs preview at the Vera List Center

New York – The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School announces its spring 2023 programs under its 2022–24 focus theme Correction.

The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School announces its spring 2023 programs under its 2022–24 focus theme Correction.

The VLC’s spring lineup includes projects that investigate decolonial frameworks for unraveling conceptions of “correction” through talks, film screenings, performances, publications, a reading series, and an exhibition.

Panel discussion
Cybercultures and Cyberfeminisms

This program focuses on cyberfeminism, looking at recent art that draws on (re)generative technologies of artificial intelligence and biological reproduction, and brings together histories of technoscientific study and cultural metaphors of inheritance and kinship with Maria Fernandez, Mindy Seu, Margaret Tan, and moderator Irina Aristkharkova. SWEET PEA: YOUR OTHER PROGENY is part of the Singapore Biennial, produced by The New School faculty member Jeannine Tang and presented in collaboration with the Singapore Art Museum.

Correction* seminar III
Correcting Mistaken Ideas: Revisiting the People’s Program at Lincoln Hospital

Acupuncturist, community organizer, and former Young Lord Walter Bosque discusses the history of radical acupuncture at the People’s Program, a drug treatment organization founded in 1970 at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx by the Young Lords, the Black Panther Party, and the Health Revolutionary Unity Movement. Monxo López, curator and co-founder of South Bronx Unite, weighs in on collective care methods.

This two-part program, produced in collaboration with Frame Contemporary Art Finland as part of its 2019-23 Rehearsing Hospitalities series, brings together institutions, curators, and artists whose activities transcend beyond hospitality and work as correctives to prescribed host and guest hierarchies. It does so in collaboration with Matti Aikio (2022-2023 Vera List Center Sámi Fellow), whose practice focuses on Indigenous sovereignty and the continuous confrontation between Sámi culture and the utilization of natural resources by Nordic nation states.

The New York City premiere of the world like a jewel in the hand—unlearning imperial plunder ii (2022), a new film that considers so-called relics of history, inviting resistance, reinterpretation, and reclamation of a world deemed lost, is marked by a screening and conversation with author, curator, and filmmaker Ariella Asha Azoulay.

The New School

The Vera List Center incarnation of C& Center of Unfinished Business, a roaming reading room and discussion-based program, includes literature that relate to the continuation and presence of colonialism in contemporary society, as well as titles from the VLC Fellows Library and The New School faculty. The exhibition includes a reading series that embeds the VLC’s focal theme Correction* in colonial legacies and postcolonial realities.
