The Piet Zwart Institute houses the Willem de Kooning Academy’s international master’s programs at Hogeschool Rotterdam. The institute, named for the pioneering Dutch designer Piet Zwart, who worked experimentally across several mediums and situations, offers a rich blend of research, in-depth specialisation, and interdisciplinary collaboration in a small learning environment.

There are six master’s programs available. Fine Art, Interior Architecture: Research + Design, Experimental Publishing, Lens-Based Media are all full-time programs, as are our two part-time master’s programs, Education in Arts and Master Design. All are predicated on a shared interest in each discipline’s complex social, cultural, and political roots. Our programs teach young and/or mid-career professionals with a critically thoughtful and inventive approach to their work through a specially crafted curriculum that combines collective learning, individual tutorial support, practice-based research, and theoretical inquiry.

The concept of “making public” is central to the activities of an educational institute. These public moments serve as a bridge to the city, a framework for addressing contemporary and relevant concerns, and developing a community around areas of interest for students, faculty members, and guests. Exhibitions, symposia, conferences, and publications extend research outside the limits of academia while also recognizing the critical speculative space for reflection and knowledge production made possible only by the Piet Zwart Institute’s rigorous master framework.
