S.M.A.K. presents Rose Wylie: picky people notice..., from November 26, 2022 to 30 April, 2023.
Rose Wylie (b.1934, Hythe, UK) is an internationally known figurative painter whose large output is influenced by literature, movies, folklore, mythology, and celebrity culture. The artist is fascinated by honest, seemingly naive expressions and pulls from clichéd as well as ignored visual and narrative traditions. She seamlessly interweaves her broad knowledge of cultural production with observations and experiences that generate an impartial sense of amazement for everyday life in her large-scale paintings.
Despite the fact that Wylie’s compositions are spontaneous and humorous, several studies frequently precede the real paintings. They are supported by formal issues that are resolved in candid associations, extraordinary scale distortions, and unexpected perspectives. This intricate pictorial process, in which observation of the known world leads to the creation of a new one, imbues her exact renditions with a high level of visual intensity. This is Wylie’s first museum exhibition in Belgium, and it will contain a new series of paintings.
