Dirimart is happy to announce its participation in the spotlight section of Frieze Masters, which is devoted to women artists and is curated by Camille Morineau (co-founder and research director of AWARE—Archives of Women Artists, Research, and Exhibitions). The spotlight section will feature a remarkable collection of Fahrelnissa Zeid works.
At the time of her retrospective show in 2017, Tate Modern referred to Zeid (1901–91) as “one of the finest female painters of the 20th century.” Her career included numerous style shifts and media experimentation. She achieved fame throughout her lifetime for both her later expressionistic portraits of her family and close friends as well as her colossal and dynamic abstract works that envelop the observer in fields of color, light, and energizing movement. These pieces illustrate her idea of art as a never-ending quest that is motivated by a spiritual yearning to create paintings that depict cosmic travels and inner mental universes.
Zeid’s presence in post-World War II Paris is what is best associated with her, although she also showed her work in London in the late 1940s and 1950s and in New York during the height of Abstract Expressionism. She returned to the London art scene thanks to her status as an artist from Paris, becoming the first woman to hold a solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in 1954.
