October 2–December 30, 2022
Lay Figure, a solo exhibition of Sascha Braunig’s artwork from Portland, Maine, will open Oakville Galleries’ autumn exhibition season (born Qualicum Beach, BC, Canada, 1983). Braunig’s works are experiments in color, form, and illusion that draw on the Pictures Generation, the Chicago Imagists, and practical effects from horror films. The tensions of the present day, such as being a subject within the grid of digital or gender systems, are expressed through her occasionally barbed, tubular, netting, or neon-lit forms.
The artist assembles fresh and current paintings and drawings that are centered on the compositional motif of individuals engaged in battle with a dress-like structure for her first solo exhibition at a museum in Canada. The emotion of battling a system that is more strong than you and in which you are also intimately entwined is analogized in these pieces using material attributes.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication of new writing on the work of Sascha Braunig, published by Oakville Galleries in partnership with Triangle Books, Belgium. Contributors include curator Frances Loeffler and artist Lucy Kim.
The opening reception will be held on Sunday, October 2 at Centennial Square (2–3:30pm) and in Gairloch Gardens (3:30–5pm). All are welcome. For related public programming, please visit oakvillegalleries.com for updated information.
About Oakville Galleries
A museum of modern art called Oakville Galleries is situated 30 kilometers west of Toronto. One of Canada’s top art museums, the Oakville Galleries is housed in two locations: a lakeside home and park and a downtown Oakville library. Its principal focus is on showcasing the work of emerging and mid-career artists from all over the country and the globe.
The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation’s Treaty Lands and Territory, as well as the Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee peoples’ ancestral lands, are where Oakville Galleries is situated. We are appreciative of the chance to conduct business on this land and, as an institution, Oakville Galleries understands the value of creating and upholding meaningful and respectful connections with the original occupants and custodians of the land.
The Ontario Arts Council, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Corporation of the Town of Oakville, and the Canada Council for the Arts all provide funding towards Oakville Galleries’ operations.
