October 15–23, 2022
The UBU theatrical production, which is being staged by American stage actor, playwright, and theatre director Robert Wilson, was the brainchild of Es Baluard Museu director Imma Prieto. It is being presented by Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma.
The work draws inspiration from Joan Miró’s study and works centered around the Ubu Roi world as well as the 1896 text Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry, a critique of war and authoritarianism with a monstrous, despotic main character that is still relevant today.
This new UBU is the result of a curatorial idea connected to the current Es Baluard Museum exhibition Personae: Masks Against Barbarism, which examines the museum’s collection. The show includes a section devoted to Joan Miró’s obsession with Jarry’s work, which he documented in original drawings and lithographs about Ubu Roi and a set of life-size puppets that were created in partnership with Joan Baixas.
Wilson will bring the characters created by Jarry and Miró to life while providing a modern reinterpretation of the fictional world of Ubu.
Between October 15 and October 23, 2022, UBU will be held in Es Baluard Museu. Soon, tickets will be available for purchase on the Es Baluard Museu website.
The project is coproduced with Successió Miró, the Conselleria de Fons Europeus, Universitat i Cultura del Govern de les Illes Balears, Acción Cultural Española, Palma City Council, Festival Grec de Barcelona and the Kunstfest Weimar.
