August 12–14, 2022

The second Meydan weekend will take place in Kassel from August 12–14, 2022, according to a release from documenta fifteen. Meydan #2 features a music program, lumbung Film, a flea market, talks, and workshops in association with Kulturzentrum Schlachthof.

A public gathering place, such as a square or a park, is referred to as a meydan in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu. It is a convenient location for gatherings where people can argue, disagree, and celebrate.

Kulturzentrum Schlachthof, Boreal, and Nordstadtpark
Address: Mombachstraße 10–12, 34127 Kassel
Opening hours: Friday and Saturday: 2pm–4am, Sunday: 2–8pm

Musicians, such as Ebow, Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band, La Nefera, Nina Ogot, TootArd, and many more, will be performing at Nordstadtpark. In addition, collectives Alvozay and Room 4 Resistance are invited to host performances, parties, DJ sets, and workshops.

Meetings with Composting Knowledge, an ongoing experimental network for knowledge production started by ruruHaus in Kassel, are also a part of Meydan #2. It brings together various organic elements and resources—such as knowledge, time, ideas, spaces, or funds—to embrace cooperative, nonhierarchical, neighborhood-centered ideals. Its foundation is the idea of jointly cultivated compost. Over 20 individuals from Kassel, Tokyo, Sofia, Holualoa, Singapore, Beirut, Zurich, Toronto, Stockholm, and London are currently a part of the composting network.

As part of Meydan, the grand opening of the 24th Kasseler Weltmusikfestival takes place at Kulturzentrum Schlachthof, Boreal, and Nordstadtpark.

Gloria-Kino
Address: Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 3, 34117 Kassel
Opening hours: Friday and Saturday: 7–10pm, Sunday: 5:15–10pm

The second Meydan weekend has been especially curated by GDR International. It alludes to the exceptional presence of archives at documenta fifteen as remnants of alternate histories and networks of solidarity in reaction to the lumbung Film program by lumbung artists. Tobias Hering, a curator based in Berlin, has chosen films by Peter Ulbrich, Emile de Antonio, and Chetna Vora to examine how Socialist East Germany’s (German Democratic Republic) internationalist agenda influenced the nation’s cinema politics and production. The program discusses how an appropriate understanding of East German solidarity with freedom movements in the Global South remains lacking as a corollary to the GDR’s complete delegitimization in official German History. The movies will be screened at Gloria-Kino, a cinema built in 1954 that still has the feel of a 1950s movie house. The movies are in English or German with English subtitles.

Throughout documenta fifteen, the Meydan program is held on the second Saturday of each month. The first one happened between July 8 and 10, the next one will be from August 12 to 14, and the final one will take place between September 9 and 11 of 2022. Meydan is a partnership with Kassel ekosistem, a number of Kassel-based collectives and initiatives that were asked by the ruangrupa to engage in joint lumbung activity.

The full program will be announced soon on documenta fifteen’s website. The entrance is free.
