Applications open for Art Brussels 2023

Application deadline: October 14

Art Brussels announces that the applications to participate in the 39th edition are open. The fair will be held at Brussels Expo, its new location in the classic Art Deco halls constructed in 1935, from Thursday, April 20, through Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Art Brussels is a must-attend event on the worldwide art calendar, bringing together over 25.000 international collectors and art enthusiasts each year. It offers a rich VIP programme featuring, among others, Michel François at Bozar, Marina Pinsky at La loge, and Marc Camille Chaimowicz at WIELS, as well as special visits to private collections, tailored for your VIP invitees.

Art Brussels is universally commended for maintaining its focus on “From Discovery to Rediscovery” and for balancing established and up-and-coming artists. 95 percent of the represented artists are still active today. According to perceptions, the fair is sized on a human scale, favoring quality over quantity with a soft spot for curatorial approaches and solo presentations. The element of surprise is ingrained in Art Brussels, and its collectors anticipate it. There are three sections to the fair, which includes about 160 galleries:

Discovery

Exhibiting booths with a single artist presentation or an engaging conversation between two artists who are not yet well-known in the European context and whose practices represent a true “find” for consumers. Galleries that actively encourage developing foreign artists.

Prime

Modern or contemporary galleries that exhibit internationally recognized established and mid-career artists. Galleries are encouraged by the fair to exhibit a visually appealing curatorial effort.

Rediscovery

Dedicated to live or deceased artists from the 20th century who are underappreciated, overlooked, or forgotten. This section seeks to explore and illuminate novel, obscure, and innovative methods that are yet outside the mainstream of art history.

Additionally, stands in Solo can be combined with galleries in Prime & Rediscovery. Galleries must create a project-based presentation by one active artist that offers a more in-depth perspective on the artist’s practice in order to be eligible for the Solo section. These presentations ought to be audacious or risk-taking in style (site-specific works are encouraged).

The International Committee chooses the galleries in Prime and Rediscovery as well as the solo presentations. The Discovery Committee chooses the Discovery booths. The fair’s website lists the members of the committee by name.

The best Discovery booth and the best Solo artist at the fair receive the Discovery Prize and the Solo Prize, respectively, from Art Brussels each year. Here you can find information on awards, jury members, and prior winners.

In addition to relying on Belgium having the greatest population of collectors in the world, Art Brussels places a strong emphasis on drawing in the next generation of artists. Each year, the fair welcomes 250 foreign collectors, as well as curators, journalists, and more than 50 (inter)national groups of collectors, patrons, and museum friends.
