The four-day Gathering for Rehearsing Hospitalities conference will take place in Helsinki, Finland, and online from October 5 to 8. For interaction and discussion, the event brings together audiences and practitioners of contemporary art from around the world.
The gathering this year is centered on techniques that address the redistribution of resources, wealth, and power within the art world and society at large. It is put up by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and includes film screenings, workshops, performative and discursive activities, and publications. The LAPS – Live Art and Performance Studies Master’s Programme collaborates with the Theatre Academy of the Uniarts Helsinki to organize on-site events and accompanying installations.
The program focuses on institutional, curatorial, and creative activities that go beyond hospitality offers and challenge uneven power structures, including those that are ingrained in host and guest dynamics. It raises issues like commons, community land ownership, labor and agency, institutions for correction and care, shared resources, relationships between education and power, and alternatives to the existing institutional and economic frameworks, among others.

Gathering for Rehearsing Hospitalities autumn 2022 programme is organised and curated in collaboration with artist, curator and storyteller Farbod Fakharzadeh, LAPS – Live Art and Performance Studies at the Theatre Academy of Uniarts Helsinki, artist Iida Nissinen and art educator Kaura Raudaskoski, Steve Maher, producer of Pixelache (2019–2021) together with Mary Conlon, Artistic Director of Ormston House in Ireland, and Frame’s Head of Programme Jussi Koitela.

Alongside the public programme, Frame will be arranging studio visits, meetings and networking opportunities for visiting curators.
New publication
Along with the programme, Frame and Archive Books will publish a new reader. Rehearsing Hospitalities Companion 4 features contributions that hold insights, tools, provocations and responses on forms and futures of redistribution. It is edited by Frame’s Associate Curator Yvonne Billimore and Head of Programme Jussi Koitela. The publication, available on October 5, is released digitally in an open-access format with hard copies distributed by Archive Books.
About Rehearsing Hospitalities
Rehearsing Hospitalities, Frame’s public programme from 2019 to 2023, connects artists, curators and other practitioners in the field of contemporary art and beyond to build up and mediate new practices, understandings and engagements with diverse hospitalities. It fosters critical discourse, pluralistic sharing and collaboration between diverse (artistic) practitioners in contemporary societies. From autumn 2022 to spring 2023, the programme is part of the EU-funded project Islands of Kinship: A Collective Manual for Sustainable and Inclusive Art Institutions.
Frame Contemporary Art Finland is an advocate for Finnish contemporary art. Frame supports international initiatives, facilitates professional partnerships, and encourages critical development of the field. In addition, Frame commissions Finland’s participation in the Venice Biennale.
