Artissima 2022: galleries and artists

November 4–6, 2022
Preview: November 3

The 29th edition of Artissima 2022, which will be the first one under the direction of Luigi Fassi, is the most contemporary art market in Italy and is sponsored by Intesa Sanpaolo.

The Oval in Torino will host the four flagship sections of the fair—Main Section, New Entries, Monologue/Dialogue, and Art Spaces & Editions—as well as the three curated sections—Disegni, Present Future, and Back to the Future—from Friday, November 4, through Sunday, November 6, with the participation of 174 Italian and international galleries, including 35 monographic projects.

Artissima 2022 will feature galleries from 28 nations and 4 continents. The South American galleries Raquel Arnaud and Leme (both Sao Paulo), the African galleries First Floor Gallery Harare (Harare, Victoria Falls), Smac (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Stellenbosch), Whatiftheworld (Cape Town), and others are among the non-European exhibitors. Additionally, Bivy Gallery (Anchorage) from Alaska will make its debut .

There are 40 galleries showing in the fair for the first time. They include Antenna Space (Shanghai), Nagel Draxler (Berlin, Cologne, Munich), Dawid Radziszewski (Warsaw), Union Pacific (London). The New Entries section, set aside for emerging galleries open for less than five years, features, among others, Eugster Belgrade (Belgrade), Max Goelitz (Munich), Noah Klink (Berlin), Sweetwater (Berlin).

Some of the highest profile and established galleries on the international and national scene continue to take part in Artissima. Many have supported the fair for over two decades and a number are renewing their participation this year. They include Art : Concept (Paris), Alfonso Artiaco (Napoli), Continua (San Gimignano, Beijing, Les Moulins, Havana, Roma, Sao Paulo, Paris), König (Berlin, London, Seoul, Vienna), Urs Meile (Lucerne, Beijing, Ardez), NEU (Berlin), Franco Noero (Torino), Gregor Podnar (Vienna), Lia Rumma (Napoli), Tucci Russo (Torre Pellice, Torino), The Modern Institute (Glasgow), Barbara Weiss (Berlin), Jocelyn Wollf (Paris), Zero… (Milano).

Disegni, Present Future, and Back to the Future, the three selected areas of the fair this year, will return to the physical presence with thematic booths while also existing on the digital platform Artissima Voice Over with exclusive in-depth content.

Irina Zucca Alessandrelli, the curator of Milan’s Collezione Ramo, is the curator of Disegni. It features initiatives set up as solo exhibitions to highlight the individuality and authenticity of works on paper. The segment, which is unique among Italian art fairs, highlights the power and variety of a genre that occasionally receives less attention than it merits.

The curators of Present Future are Maurin Dietrich, director of the Kunstverein München in Munich, and Saim Demircan, an independent curator and writer residing in Torino. With the intention of highlighting fresh trends on the global art landscape, the area for up-and-coming artists showcases monographic projects.

The curators of Back to the Future are Balthazar Lovay, a freelance curator based in Geneva, and Anna Gritz, director of Haus am Waldsee in Berlin. Monographs on notable contemporary artists who helped shape the field and whose work has had a significant impact on art history are included in this section. Back to the Future is an exhibition that brings together works created between 1960 and the present with the goal of reintroducing worldwide artists who have contributed significantly to contemporary art to the public eye.

The curated parts will be present inside the fair physically as well as on Artissima Voice Over, a unique digital platform developed with help from the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.

The fair is managed by Artissima srl, a company affiliated with Fondazione Torino Musei. The Artissima trademark belongs to Regione Piemonte, Città Metropolitana di Torino and Città di Torino. The 29th edition of Artissima, with the Patronage of Ministero della cultura, is produced with the support of the three trademark holders, in collaboration with Fondazione CRT, Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and Camera di commercio di Torino.
