The Belkin Gallery is committed to critique, curation, equity, and social justice. This is a special chance for a director or curator who works in the field of contemporary art to contribute a variety of experiences, backgrounds, and viewpoints to UBC and the communities of Vancouver, Canada, as well as other countries. In addition to serving as director, the chosen candidate will also maintain a tenure-stream professorial appointment in the Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory (AHVA) as either an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, depending on their qualifications and experience, and they will be a contributing member of the Critical and Curatorial Studies (CCST) program. The appointment will begin on January 1, 2023, or on a mutually convenient start date. After serving as Director for a five-year term that may be extended, the chosen candidate will join the AHVA faculty and become a member of the organization.
The Director/Curator, who works under the direction of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, is in charge of the Gallery’s overall aesthetic vision and operations, including exhibitions, collections, acquisitions, programming, and management of the professional staff. The Director/Curator will continue to pursue an active program of scholarly endeavors, curatorial practice, and research. They will also instruct and manage graduate students in CCST and AHVA. Along with managing fundraising efforts for the Gallery’s operations, acquisitions, programming, research, and special initiatives, the Director/Curator also works closely with UBC Development to maintain the trust of the Gallery’s significant contributors.
The chosen applicant must be able to express a clear curatorial vision and have an understanding of the principles and assets that the Gallery upholds. They will be required to show that they can guide an organization through change, design a strategic plan that is forward-looking for dealing with expansion, and foster an atmosphere that is cooperative, respectful, and inclusive for students, staff, faculty, and community partners. Academic credentials like a PhD or suitable terminal degree as well as a combination of education and curatorial and publishing experience will all be taken into consideration as types of accomplishment evidence. Similar to that, a person’s aptitude to teach can be shown in a variety of contexts, such as training, mentoring, or previous teaching experience.
In addition to research publications and scholarly activity, we are looking for candidates who have a strong track record of curation, creative works, and/or professional contributions that will satisfy the requirements for appointment to a tenure-stream professorial position. The area of specialization within contemporary art is open, but the successful applicant will have excellent knowledge and understanding of contemporary visual art practices and critical theory. The ideal applicant would also have knowledge of the Gallery’s collection and the capacity to engage the local conversation about art in Vancouver/Canada in an international dialogue.
