Entang Wiharso: Double Horizon at Srisasanti Gallery

July 9–September 4, 2022

Entang Wiharso’s solo show Double Horizon is proudly on display at Srisasanti Gallery. This exhibition shows how Wiharso dealt with various competing points of view resulting from his local and international relationships over the period of time between 1998 and 2022.

The body of work on display is a synthesis of a lifetime spent paying close attention to the political, economic, social, and cultural systems that are created and maintained by relationships of power. His readings, which are expressed in the form of artwork, reflect an underlying wish for world peace and justice for all people.

Entang Wiharso studies people, focusing on how they interact with their instincts, emotions, beliefs, and belief systems. He believed that these facets of the human experience may be related to global (current) concerns. Then, he recognizes and communicates through his work what he sees to be unique kinds of institutionalized racism, slavery, and colonialism.

Wiharso states, “This exhibition is a way to see and re-present my artistic practice over a span of three decades. I believe Art is knowledge and we should share it with others. Having spent significant portions of the last three decades outside the city of Jogja working in the national and international arena, I want to share this exhibition with the Jogja community where I have lived and worked.”

Entang Wiharso explores ideology, philosophy, and identity while tackling universal problems with power, loss, and love. His work enhances our capacity to observe, feel, and comprehend human experiences based on love, hate, fanaticism, belonging, and home. He is particularly well-known for his large-scale paintings, wall sculptures, and installations. By combining storytelling techniques and unorthodox materials, Wiharso’s art paints a nuanced portrait of the human condition that is filled with social, political, and sexual commentary.

Wiharso, a 2019 Guggenheim Fellowship winner, uses glitter in a novel way to create rich, intricate surfaces that attract in spectators while providing incisive, amusing, and emotional criticism. In Double Horizon, Wiharso exhibits his most recent series of artworks as well as a few pieces from the previous three decades. The pieces chosen emphasize the contrast between the cultures and experiences in his two countries of origin, Indonesia and America.

From July 9 until September 4, 2022, Double Horizon will be accessible to the general public. Tuesday through Sunday, 12 to 7 pm, are gallery hours. The inaugural reception will be place at Tirtodipuran Link in Yogyakarta on Friday, July 8 from 5-8 p.m. (registration required). Entang Wiharso: Double Horizon will have a full-color, 132-page catalog with articles and interviews in both Indonesian and English available at Srisasanti Gallery.
