The Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) is the largest art and design university in Norway. Six faculties make up KHiO: the Academy of Dance, the Department of Design, the Academy of Fine Art, the Department of Art & Craft, the Academy of Opera, and the Academy of Theatre. Within these primary subjects, KHiO provides a wide range of courses of study at the bachelor’s and master’s degree level. In the areas of ceramics, textiles, print and drawing, metal and jewelry, art and public space, the Art and Craft Department offers advanced art education. With regard to workshop-based art practice, the department takes an experimental tack.
Academy serves as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, the creation of material-based art, and plans for integrating art into public spaces. The examination of craft-based knowledge and the connections between art, society, and the individual are prioritized in its study programs.
A bachelor’s program in medium- and material-based art as well as two master’s programs are available through the Art and Craft Department. A component of the university’s PhD program is the research fellows program. There are about 155 students and 35 faculty members in the department.
About the position
Applications are now being accepted by the Department of Art and Craft for a Professor position overseeing the discipline of metal and jewelry art. The post is full-time, has a fixed term of six years, and after a public announcement and successful new application, there is a chance of an additional duration. The expected appointment date is January 1, 2023.
Study area metal and jewellery art
The curriculum combines art theory and methodology with artistic practice, with an emphasis on craft and materials. Strong emphasis is placed on both intellectual and practical experimentation and exploration. The study area aims to increase students’ understanding of the significance that metal and jewelry art can express as well as their ability to critically reflect on their own artistic practice.
Jewelry art, object/sculpture, installation, art in public spaces, and concept-based techniques make up the majority of the study’s focus areas. Technical courses, workshops, lectures, and tutorials are some of the instructional formats. The link between concept and subject matter is crucial. The department has one of the best-equipped technical facilities among major art academies.
Main tasks
The chosen candidate will be in charge of the aesthetic and educational aspects of the growth and administration of the study area of metal and jewelry art. The study area’s leadership is responsible for creating the department’s bachelor’s and master’s study programs with an emphasis on educational quality, professional relevance, and contextual understanding, including the history of metal and jewelry art and current trends. The chosen candidate will be required to contribute to the dialogue about art in society and support efforts to promote the department’s work both nationally and internationally. Coordination of the study area’s teaching and research activity is part of the leadership of the study area, which makes up 20% of the post.
Teaching, tutoring, artistic research and growth, and administrative work are all crucial responsibilities. It is envisaged that teaching and the candidate’s personal artistic study and practice will be closely related.
The dean, who oversees the department’s professional and administrative operations, is the head manager for the role.

Salary according to state employee scale, gross wages as professor SKO 1013, NOK 701 300 to 839 900 (wage scale 69–80) depending on qualifications. Two percent of the salary will be withheld and deposited in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
